PERFORMANCE WITH MEMORY BIWA AND ROBERT MACHIRI
An appendage to Ndimi Dzevadzimu Vangu

Listening at Pungwe is a collaborative project (Memory Biwa & Robert Machiri) that takes off from re-listening to the use of voice, language, instruments, bodily movements and modern technology in recordings – both archival and contemporary. Their performance engages the possibilities enunciated by technology, ‘to split sound from source’, only to later reframe and amplify the sound within photographies. In this performance, a Pungwe* delivered through playback, we offer a moment to reflect what recorded voices and instruments can invoke through and beyond the body.

  • A gathering of this form was known as Pungwe (shona word for vigil), during Zimbabwe’s armed struggle of colonial resistance. It was mediated through mbira music rituals.
