Invitation cards, ads, posters, and press texts possess a certain ambivalence. They are at once outreach and marketing tools, artworks, and information media. Formerly associated with the hope of avoiding objectification and used by artists to this end, the promotionally effective ephemera are today themselves the subject of art-historical debates, as well as exhibits and collector’s items with an intrinsic value marking the status of the actors and institutions they advertise for. At the symposium “They Printed It!”, states the press text of Kunsthalle Zurich, artists, curators, art historians, and collectors will discuss the art of communicating and publishing, as well as the tensional relationship between art, self-marketing, and publishing that has characterized the field of ephemera since the 1960s.
