The Prix Art and Ethics is a sculpture by the artist George Steinmann in the form of an art prize. The award is endowed with € 20,000.
Initiated by George Steinmann in 2014, the Prix Art and Ethics will be awarded for the fourth time in 2024. The winner is the Tallinn Art Hall. It is being honored for its commitment as a visionary cultural bridge builder in Estonia.
The prize will be awarded to Tallinn Art Hall, represented by Director Paul Aguraiuja, at a public ceremony at Kunsthalle Bern.

Tallinn Art Hall
The Tallinn Art Hall, built in 1934, is an important institution/place for Estonian art and culture. The building on Freedom Square in the city of Tallinn is a listed building. Through his work Ruumi naasmine, the overall renovation of the Tallinn Art Hall as a sustainable sculpture (1992-1995), George Steinmann has a deep connection to the institution. Due to severe damage to the foundations, caused among other things by the bombing of Tallinn by the Soviet Union in 1944, the building must be extensively renovated again. The Tallinn Art Hall’s exhibition operations have been relocated to a temporary site for the construction work, which will run until the end of 2026. The location is in Lasnamäe, a district with growing socio-cultural tensions, which have intensified since the war in Ukraine. In this context, the relocation of the historic Tallinn Art Hall to the Lasnamäe district is a courageous project, a symbolic building of a bridge of dialog between the Estonian and Russian-speaking populations.

The artwork Prix Art and Ethics emphasizes the work of the Tallinn Art Hall in a fragile geo-political environment. It demonstrates Steinmann’s commitment to practices that go against linear time sequences, consider their footprint and uphold the concept of sustainability through cultural participation.
